Nurse shift requests and request-driven scheduling

Managers searching for “self-scheduling” usually need a fair way to honor preferences. N-Ship lets managers collect weekday work and exclusion requests, enter them on the web, and have generation honor them—not a nurse self-booking portal.

Shift labels and rules shown here (D·E·N, OFF, ACT, and similar) follow common Korean hospital 3-shift ward practice.

Request-driven scheduling—not a self-booking board

Classic self-scheduling lets nurses pick open shifts in a marketplace. N-Ship does not offer a nurse-facing shift-bid or open-shift claim board, and the mobile app does not include a request screen for staff to submit preferences.

Instead, managers collect preferences (for example from chat or meetings), enter weekday work and exclusion requests on the web, combine them with staffing and OFF rules, then generate a month and edit exceptions.

Requests the generator can apply

  • Weekday work requests: prefer a shift on a given weekday (entered by managers on the web)
  • Weekday exclusion requests: avoid a shift on a given weekday
  • Monthly base Off: a per-month Off day count for the account; leave is set per nurse in the calendar
  • Overlap limits for pairs who should not share a day/shift
  • Handover limits for difficult handoff pairings

Fairness after requests are in

Requests alone do not guarantee balance. N-Ship also applies consecutive OFF, weekly OFF, and the no-3-consecutive-nights option during generation, and the dashboard surfaces fairness-oriented stats so managers can see who absorbed nights or fewer offs.

When preferences conflict with hard staffing floors, the product still aims to produce a roster and report unmet conditions instead of failing silently.

Frequently asked questions

Is N-Ship full nurse self-scheduling software?

No. Nurses do not claim open shifts in a self-serve board. Managers collect preferences and enter weekday work/exclusion requests on the web, then generate.

Can staff submit day-of-week preferences themselves?

No. Staff do not submit preferences in the product. Managers enter weekday work and exclusion requests on the web; the generator honors those entries. The mobile app has no request screen for this.

How is this better than collecting preferences in a chat app?

Once managers enter the requests on the web, preferences live next to staffing rules and are considered during auto-generation, instead of being re-read manually while filling Excel.

How do I evaluate this without my full roster?

Create an account, use “Try with sample ward” on the dashboard, enter or inspect example requests on the web, and generate a month.
